چکیده
Nanostructure-Mediated Launching and Detection of 2D Surface Plasmons by Jared Day Au nanoparticles deposited on a metallic film act as nanoantenna receivers and transmitters for the coupling of free-space radiation into, and out of, 2D surface plasmons. Nanosteps, sub-lO-nm gaps between metallic films of differing thickness, can also launch and detect surface plasmons. In this thesis both types of structures are used to locally launch propagating surface plasmon waves and probe their properties. Nanoparticle-Iaunched surface plasmons emerge as two lobes of nominally 90 degree angular width, propagating along the direction of incident polarization. Alternatively, plasmons can be launched unidirectionally, by asymmetric illumination of a nanoparticle receiver.

We exploit a plasmon mediated two-step momentum down-conversion scheme to convert low-energy tunneling electrons into propagating photons. Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) propagating along an extended gold nanowire are excited on one end by low-energy electron tunneling and are then converted to free-propagating photons at the other end. The separation of excitation and outcoupling proves tha...
متن کاملPerfect coupling of light to surface plasmons by coherent absorption.
We show theoretically that coherent light can be completely absorbed and transferred to surface plasmons in a two- or three-dimensional metallic nanostructure by exciting it with the time-reversed mode of the corresponding surface plasmon laser ("spaser"). The narrow-band perfect absorption is a generalization and application of the concept of critical coupling to a nanocavity with surface plas...

متن کاملSolar cell efficiency enhancement using a hemisphere texture containing metal nanostructures
One major problem of the conventional solar cells is low conversion efficiency. In this work, we have proposed a new design including hemisphere texturing on top and metallic plasmonic nanostructure under the silicon layer to enhance the optical absorption inside the photosensitive layer. The finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method has been used to investigate the interaction of light wi...
